Alberta’s independent game-development sector was growing alongside the province’s better-known studios such as BioWare, with small teams creating original games for international digital markets. Developers including Edmonton’s XGen Studios and Calgary’s Klei Entertainment demonstrated that Alberta companies could build commercially successful games without relying on the traditional large-studio model. The growth of independent development was supported by increasingly accessible development tools and digital distribution, allowing Alberta creators to reach global audiences from Calgary and Edmonton. At the same time, small studios faced the financial uncertainty of producing games with limited teams and resources.
