Why this matters to Alberta game development

Edmonton-based SnakeTakes Studios’ work with Microsoft and Sony gave a small Alberta independent developer direct access to the major console platforms. The relationships allowed the studio to develop its original science-fiction project, End of the Beginning, for Xbox and PlayStation alongside PC, moving beyond the barriers that can make console development difficult for smaller teams. The milestone was significant for Alberta’s independent sector because SnakeTakes was developing its own intellectual property rather than working on a project owned by a larger outside studio. End of the Beginning had begun with a small, privately financed Edmonton team and expanded into a broader property encompassing the game and other media. Establishing relationships with Microsoft and Sony demonstrated that an Edmonton indie studio could gain access to international platform holders while continuing to develop original intellectual property from Alberta.
