Local tech wizards vie for cash and possible commercial glory in crafting video games

Bow Valley College’s Indie Ignition Game Developer Accelerator is helping Calgary-area creators move game concepts toward commercially sustainable businesses through coaching, incubation and direct financial support. Its second pitch competition brought together 17 participants competing for $54,000, with funding from the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund and TC Energy, including dedicated awards for female-led teams. Canmore-based Blue Shift Immersives demonstrates the range of projects emerging from the program. Founder Louise Edwards is developing a virtual reality bear-safety game that combines game technology with education and wildlife expertise, with potential applications at resorts and visitor centres. More than 40 teams have participated in the broader accelerator program, providing Alberta developers with a local pathway from prototype development through business training, funding opportunities and incubation.
