Foreign investment spurs serious growth in Canada’s video-game industry

Why this matters to Alberta game development
Beamdog’s acquisition by Aspyr in 2022 demonstrated how foreign investment could support the continued growth of an established Edmonton game studio. Founded in 2009 by BioWare alumni Trent Oster and Cameron Tofer, Beamdog had already expanded significantly, moving into an 11,000-square-foot space in 2017 and growing from 24 to 75 employees before becoming part of Aspyr and Sweden-based Embracer Group.
For Alberta, the significance was not simply the acquisition itself, but that Beamdog could remain and continue growing in Edmonton under international ownership. Oster described the deal as providing greater stability and a foundation for future growth while allowing the Edmonton-grown company to remain part of the local industry. Alongside BioWare’s earlier acquisition by Electronic Arts, Beamdog provides another example of an Alberta studio attracting international investment while retaining a substantial development presence in the province.
