Edmonton’s Beamdog unveils Baldur’s Gate: Siege Dragonspear, first new game in beloved series since 2001

Why this matters to Alberta game development
Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear marked a significant step for Edmonton-based Beamdog as its first title with an original storyline. Unveiled at the Art Gallery of Alberta, the game was the first new expansion in the Baldur’s Gate series since 2001 and represented a major investment for the growing independent studio.
Beamdog’s work also continued Edmonton’s long association with the Baldur’s Gate franchise. Originally developed by BioWare, the series returned to developers with direct connections to its origins through Beamdog president and former BioWare developer Trent Oster. Beamdog had already remastered the first two games, with Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition selling more than one million copies. Siege of Dragonspear demonstrated an Edmonton studio progressing from remastering locally created games to producing substantial new content for an internationally recognized franchise, while continuing to build on technology and expertise originating at BioWare.
