Edmonton’s Beamdog hopes to stand on its own with new Baldur’s Gate game

Why this matters to Alberta game development
Beamdog’s development of Adventure Y marked an important transition for the Edmonton studio from remastering existing games toward creating substantial original content. Founded by former BioWare developers Trent Oster and Cameron Tofer, Beamdog had grown from two employees in 2009 to 19 while operating from offices near Whyte Avenue.
The project also continued an unusually strong connection between two generations of Edmonton game development. BioWare originally created Baldur’s Gate, while Beamdog rebuilt and expanded those games for modern platforms before developing a new story set between the first two titles. Sales of the enhanced editions reached hundreds of thousands of copies and provided the small independent studio with greater financial stability. Adventure Y represented Beamdog’s attempt to demonstrate that it could move beyond preservation and remastering work, establish itself as a sustainable Edmonton developer and eventually build its own creative legacy.
