Why this matters to Alberta game development

The Low Road marked an important milestone for Edmonton-based XGen Studios, representing its largest and most ambitious project to that point. The story-driven adventure game was developed over three and a half years by a small team of eight full-time employees and released in July 2017. The project also demonstrated the studio’s resilience following the sudden death of founder Skye Boyes in 2015. Rather than abandon development, the team completed the game using the foundation Boyes had established, while his wife Kaelyn Boyes prepared to take over XGen’s day-to-day business operations. Her decision to return to Edmonton reflected the importance of the city’s supportive game-development community to the studio’s future. Completing The Low Road allowed XGen to continue Boyes’ legacy while demonstrating that the independent Edmonton studio could successfully carry a substantial original project through development and release.
